There is a saying in the refereeing world that a referee can only commit suicide but an assistant can commit murder. If they make mistakes it is the referee who carries the can. Assistants are seldom berated by managers and virtually immune from criticism in the media.

West Ham United co-owner David Gold admits his club are considering an ambitious approach to sign England midfielder David Beckham. Beckham is currently recovering from surgery on a ruptured Achilles tendon that will rule him out of the World Cup in South Africa, but the LA Galaxy star is still keen to prolong his playing career and Gold believes he may be interested in a move to West Ham. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger played up his team's Premier League title credentials after a hard-fought win against West Ham sent them to the top of the league. The Gunners will slip back if either Manchester United or Chelsea win their games in hand but the long-serving manager hailed his young team's maturity after playing half of Saturday's 2-0 win with 10 men. "People don't realize how young we are," the Frenchman said.

Manchester United beat Liverpool 2- 1 to move two points ahead at the top of the Premier League on Sunday as Chelsea were held to 1-1 draw at Blackburn. Fernando Torres headed Liverpool ahead at Old Trafford only for Wayne Rooney to equalize in the 12th minute. Pepe Reina saved a penalty, but Rooney put the rebound home for his 33rd goal of the season and Park Ji-sung headed a second-half winner from Darren Fletcher's cross.

West Ham United fans should note that tickets are selling fast for Kevin Mitchell's bid to land the interim WBO lightweight belt on a big night of boxing at the Boleyn. Supporters have been snapping up seats in their droves for the Saturday 15 May fight night since they went on sale last Friday. Mitchell - nicknamed The Hammer - will top the bill against Australian Michael Katsidis, with the packed programme featuring ten contests.
